Découvertes 2008 (2) : Les anciens

1. Al Green


Al Green is back in 2008 with an album he cut with ?uestLove from The Roots, they put together a great band a managed to recreate the feeling of Green's great recordings of the early seventies.
This song, which features new soul singer Anthony Hamilton is groovy as in the old days !

Al Green a sorti cette année un album qui est le plus réussi depuis son grand retour au début des années 2000. Plus de détails dans ma chronique de l'album pour etat-critique. Je vous laisse avec un titre assez groovy, dans un album au tempo plutôt relax, et chanté par Al Green avec Anthony Hamilton, un petit jeune de la néo-soul.

2. Nick Cave



He's 50 and as rocking as ever. Back from his Grinderman project, he kept his moustache and released this great album called Dig !!! Lazarus Dig !!! (buy) , tough, with killer lyrics about religion and sex (and sometimes both in the same song). The band backing him has reached a kind of musical perfection, and the album plays like a flow that is never interrupted.

Je connaissais assez mal l'Australien. Je n'avais pour ainsi dire aucun de ses albums, si ce n'est Tender Prey, pour le titre "Mercy Seat" que j'avais découvert grâce à la belle version de Johnny Cash. En fait je me méfiais de son côté batcave. Mais là j'ai découvert un sacré album, tendu, une putain de rythmique, une force qui rappelle Iggy Pop et des textes incroyables, vicelards, plein d'humour grinçant. L'album a été l'objet de ma première chronique sur etat critique. Evidemment, ça m'a donné envie de découvrir ses autres albums, ce que je ferai bientôt.

3. Alain Bashung


Alain Bashung, one of the greatest French singers alive, was there at the birth of '60s rock in France, but his career really started 15 years later when he began working with writer Boris Bergman, becoming one of the most convincing artists of the new wave area. His biggest quality, except his vocal skills, is his ability to choose the right people to help him write and produce his albums. For his new effort, he got a lot of offers from the best French songwriters but finally picked Gaëtan Roussel, the leader of Louise Attack, a folky band that was huge in the '90s. He also made a couple of songs with Gerard Manset, the mystery man of French chanson, who always chose to spend his carreer away from the mainstream, a sort of "poète maudit", with a dark and beautiful songwriting. The song I'll play you is a cover by Bashung of one of the best Manset songs, "Il voyage en solitaire". The original was recorded in 1975. Now Alain Bashung is struggling with lung cancer, but nevertheless continues to perform. His show at the Olympia last spring was very moving, but unfortunately I wasn't there.

Que dire d'Alain Bashung ? une carrière si énorme, si protéiforme aussi, si pleine de renouvellements, d'essais, d'allers et retour entre l'expérimental et le plus abordable, en traversant tous les styles musicaux, de la hard new wave de Plaies Blessures à la country de Osez Joséphine, et puis ces derniers albums assez hermétiques. Jusqu'à ce dernier disque (critiqué bien évidemment par ma pomme dans etat-critique), très beau, beaucoup plus simple, où il collabore avec le mec de Louis Attaque, groupe qui m'énervait prodigieusement dans les années 90 surtout à cause de la voix du chanteur, mais là c'est Bashung qui chante et les chansons sont plutôt bonnes il faut bien le dire. Et puis il y a cette fabuleuse rencontre avec Manset, autre franc-tireur, et cette espèce de symbiose entre ces deux grands de la chanson, sur "Comme un lego" ou encore sur la preprise par Alain d'un chef d'oeuvre de Gérard, "Il voyage en solitaire". On dirait une putain d'épitaphe, et en plus là Bashung nous fait le coup du cancer, et moi ça me rappelle Johnny Cash face à rick Rubin dans ses derniers albums, le face à face avec la faucheuse, le dernier duel ? Peut-être pas, il a de la ressource, le gars Alain, et si ça se trouve, vu ses belles performances en concert malgrè le crabe sur son dos, il lui tiendra tête, histoire de venger Brel.
